Congratulations to Mrs. Reimer who was nominated for School Nurse of the Year in New York State!
New York State Education Law requires that every child have a medical examination on entering school and in the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 10th grade. If the required medical examination form is not returned within 15 days after receipt, an examination will be scheduled by the Health Services Staff.
Occasionally, it is necessary for a student to receive medication during the school day. The School Nurse will cooperate with parent and physician in these situations; but we are obliged to follow precise procedures. In order to comply with these guidelines from NYS Nurse Practice Act and provisions of State Education law, the following requirements for administering medication in school include:
1. A written request from the family physician in which she/he indicates the drug, frequency, dosage and method of administering.
2. A written request from the parent to administer the medication as specified by the family physician.
3. The medication must be delivered directly to a school staff member by the parent.
Under NO circumstances are there to be exceptions to this procedure. Any questions regarding this can be addressed by the school nurse.

Varicella Vaccine Required
|
|
|
|
Immunization against varicella (chickenpox) is now law. In 1999 Public health Law Section 2164 was amended to require the following children to be immunized against varicella:
- all children born on or after January 1, 1998 and are entering kindergarten in September 2003
- children born on or after January 1, 2000 and are enrolled in any school.
The administration of varicella vaccine is not recommended for children under the age of one.
Information on varicella vaccine will not be required to be entered on the immunization survey form until September 2001.

Emergency Locator Cards
Our school Nurse's Office maintains an Emergency Contact card on every student in the event a child becomes ill or injured during school hours. In the best interest of your child, we urge parents to complete and return these cards promptly each year. In the event that the information changes, please notify Mrs. Reimer of the current information.
Health Services
Students in the West Islip School District are screened annually from grades K - 12 for height, weight, and vision. Audiological screening is performed for students in grades K - 7 and grade 10. Students from 8 to 16 years old are screened annually for spinal deviations. Medical examinations are mandated for students in grades K, 1, 3, 7 & 10. The school nurse, Mrs. Reimer, is responsible for scheduling physicals on students who have not had their Family Physician Certificate completed.
