| Captree Elementary School is a K-5 elementary school located one block west of the Robert Moses Causeway in West Islip, New York. Our current enrollment is 379 students, with an average class size of 22. In September 2001, Captree will expand its kindergarten classes to full-day sessions. Much thoughtful planning is going into coordinating a well-rounded, educationally sound program for our incoming kindergartners. We look forward to having them with us all day. We are proud of the faculty members of the Captree community. All are well qualified in their particular teaching disciplines, and they do everything in their power to ensure that your child's year is a productive and enjoyable one. Our teaching staff consists of 15 classroom teachers and three self-contained special education teachers. In addition, we have two physical education, one art, one vocal music, and three instrumental music teachers, as well as a full-time librarian. Our support staff includes two speech-language therapists, one resource room teacher, one remedial reading teacher, one part-time English as a Second Language teacher, two part-time psychologists, and one nurse. Captree also houses the Gifted and Talented Program for the district. This building affords students some unique educational opportunities as they journey through the West Islip schools. Our newly renovated art and music rooms allow our teachers to provide children with an exceptional orientation to the fine arts. The Library-Media Center is open for weekly class visits for instruction in library use, as well as for obtaining reading and audio-visual materials. Classroom teachers also have the opportunity to use this unique location for class instruction and research. The Early Childhood Development Center is used by our kindergarten and physical education teachers to enhance cognitive and gross motor skill development for our younger students. These additions provide us with greater ability and flexibility in meeting the needs of every child in an increasingly challenging academic environment. While we continue to deliver the academic experiences for which West Islip schools are known, we will also initiate programs that allow children to grow socially. Our extra-curricular activities include homework clubs, an art club, Literature Alive!, and a drama club. In addition, our music program offers before-school band, orchestra, and chorus rehearsals. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) provides a wide range of activities for parents and children in the Captree community. Some of these activities include New Parent and Class Parent Teas, Red Ribbon Week, Holiday Sales, Book Fairs, PARP, and much, much more! We welcome their support throughout the year, and look forward to the active involvement of many of our parents. Captree is committed to excellence, and we look forward with enthusiasm to capturing the essence of learning for our students.
